Day 7 | Tenerife

San Andres, Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Tenerife.

I didn’t post yesterday as Peachie wasn’t feeling well and needed me to stay with her when she went to bed. We had a slow day around San Andrés, Santa Cruz de Tenerife with Pops playing in a freezing cold pool while Peachie napped and a fun hike around the city when she woke. We found the gardens where the town grows their own veggies and the town church with an exercycle by the front door and quilts on the trees. Such an interesting city!!

Day 6 | Tenerife

Igueste San Andres

Tenerife.

Today, we left our first rental home after washing our clothes, and tried to dry them on the way. Each stop, we would hang them out the windows and doors of our car to create our very own portable clothes line.
We came to our second house in Igueste San Andres. On our way, we drove back towards the volcano, rode a camel, and went into La Orotava Tenerife Islas Canarias to visit a winery/vineyard.
The country is so steep the agricultural areas are mixed in with the cities since there is not enough flat land to grow vines or plants. The vineyards are tiny parcels, maybe a half acre spread out all over the country unlike most places where there are acres upon acres of vines or farmland.
We we left there and began our trip to Igueste San Andres, the drive was breathtaking, but it wasn’t until we passed Santa Cruz that the road turned terrifying. Luckily, it was 2 lanes with a guard rail but it was on the side of a cliff incredibly high up, and the only way in or out of the town we are visiting. I am so scared of heights, so these 5 or so miles were quite challenging! When we arrived, the host family told us to park by the restaurant, (only one in town) and hike down the town to our apartment.
We came off this 2 lane road on the side of the cliff almost directly by the restaurant. This is the top of the town. It’s so steep everyone in the city has to park at the top of the city where we did, and walk down to their homes. As you descend the steps, there are walkways named roads to the left and right with doors randomly spaced, gardens, homes, and apartments. A fascinating maze of a town, we can’t wait to explore more tomorrow.
Luckily, we only packed 4 backpacks for our trip but we did have all of our groceries. It was quite a hike getting everything and Peachie Pie down. Once we did, it was so worth the effort! Looking over our balcony are the “farms”, the rocky beach, Atlantic Ocean, and in the ocean, several drilling platforms. At the very top left of the cliff, you will see a white “house.” This is the cemetery, the very end of the road.

  • Sarie - Bwah-haw-haw! 🙂 Y’all are amazing with your inventive improvisation in all things! Love the laundry-in-transit adaptation! That city on the cliff sounds simultaneously terrifying and beautiful. Enjoy! Can’t wait to see the next post!

Day 5 | Tenerife

Volcano El Teide

Tenerife.

Visiting the volcano has been all Poppy has been talking about for months and today was the day. We woke up and headed up to Volcano El Teide, Tenerife (3718 M). When we were half way up Peaches began crying non-stop saying her ear hurt. At that point there were no pharmacies around and the road was too skinny to turn around on for miles and miles. It was a two lane road with a beautiful pine forest on one side and a cliff on the other. We had Tylenol and gave that to her and she calmed down. We weren’t sure if it was so much of an ascent that her ears had too much pressure and weren’t popping or if it was an infection. Once we made it to the top and the landscape began leveling off she didn’t say anything more about it. Whew.
Our surroundings went from cool beach to a city up the hill to pine forests then shrubs until there was nothing but red rocks. These rocks were the oldest lava from the volcano, the greenish ground was from when it erupted around 2k years ago, around when Jesus Christ was said to walk the earth and the black rock was from less than 300 years ago, 1790. We hiked a few miles (Peaches wearing my shirt as it was colder than we had anticipated, packed snow boots and cuddle duds but no coats) and told them to close their eyes and pretend they were on the moon. They did and it brought up fun conversation for the rest of the hike.
We left the volcano via a very rocky road over volcanic rocks and went to Masca Valley, Tenerife. We drove a really pushing it “2 lane” road, (you had to back up to a corner where there was more room if there was a bus/truck) until we found a place to park. We stopped and hiked up a smaller mountain to view the city that has no cars. John and the girls played “Ring around the Rosie” while I walked around and explored the area. We considered hiking down to the city but was told by someone who had just hiked it and stopped where we were that it was a rather strenuous hike and took a couple of hours. Had this been our first adventure of the day we may have done it but the girls were tired and beginning to get crabby so we opted to come home for an early dinner, bedtime and have some daylight of our own to enjoy champagne with the kids in bed. Opening the champagne may have been the most challenging part of the day for John Wright!!!

  • Sarie - What a view!

Are y’all shooting any video of any of this, out of curiosity? Little snippets of footage of all your worldly travels that you can compile overtime into an ongoing montage? “Around the world in twenty years … in twenty minutes!”

Amazing. Very, very happy for you! It looks tremendous there. We’re expecting some seriously nasty weather here imminently … lots of snow, high winds, deep freeze! So enjoy your island paradise and cackle gleefully at your cleverness! 🙂

Tenerife | Days 3 & 4

Visiting Loro Parque Aquarium

Tenerife.

We were hit with a tummy bug!!!  Thankfully, everyone was feeling better today so we went to the Loro Parque. The penguin exhibit was my favorite, the molting penguins were fascinating, we loved watching how the water flowed through the feathers that were still left as they swam so quickly through the water.
