Currituck County’s Department of Travel & Tourism was recognized last week by the Destination Marketing Association of North Carolina (DMANC) during the association’s annual awards ceremony. The department received two first-place awards and one second-place award for various marketing projects.
The Destination Marketing Achievement Awards honor and showcase innovative, best practices, creativity and outstanding efforts in tourism marketing. The awards earned by Currituck’s Tourism Department were presented in the Large Budget division, meaning that the Currituck bureau competed against other North Carolina destinations such as Charlotte, Raleigh, Chapel Hill and Durham.
Currituck was awarded a Platinum Award (first place) in the category of Best Print Advertising (Group) for wedding ads that were designed by Irina Coccetti, the department’s Marketing Program Manager. The ads, which feature pictures by local wedding photography company Brooke Mayo Photographers, entice brides and grooms to choose the Currituck Outer Banks as the location for their wedding.
A second Platinum Award was presented to the Currituck bureau in the category of Best Niche Marketing for its 2011 Wedding Planner. The purpose of this publication is to assist couples with coordinating their destination wedding. The guide illustrates the ease of planning a wedding at the Currituck Outer Banks. It also includes testimonials from couples who married in Currituck and pictures provided by Currituck photographers.
The third award won by the Currituck Tourism Department was given in the category of Destination Marketing Initiative. This Gold Award recognized the department for its website (visitcurrituck.com) and internet marketing campaign, which includes social media such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. Stuart Chamberlain, E-Marketing and Web Development Specialist for Currituck, heads the department’s online marketing programs.
The awards were presented at the DMANC annual awards banquet, held on September 22 in Concord, NC. Award entries were submitted by tourism departments/visitors bureaus across North Carolina. The judges were national tourism professionals including advertising agency representatives and marketing specialists.
Other Tourism staff members who were involved in the projects were: Diane Nordstrom, Director; Michele Ellis, Public Relations Coordinator; Leeann Walton, Manager of Information Centers; Clayton Howard, Events Coordinator; and Judy Vassar, Visitor Relations Coordinator.
